I racked the bar with a satisfying crash. My spotter was cheering me on. I had just bench pressed 225 lbs for 8 reps. This may seem like a low bar, pardon the pun, but I was doing this at a bodyweight of 155. What’s even more important is that in 2018, a year before, I was struggling, I would get a fever every time I trained. I couldn’t lift without feeling like I had the flu. I couldn’t make progress even though I was killing myself in the gym. Other people around me were making progress, what secret did they have?
Let’s back up even further, I started lifting in high school with my dad. I’d watch him bench press and hit the punching gym in our attic. I remember thinking how amazing his strength and speed were. I started following his lead, because everyone wants to impress their dad, right? It became a way for us to bond, we didn’t have much in common but we could always talk about my sports and the gym. The gym became our shared language and a way for us to actually talk about life; the only way we could have in-depth conversations.
The gym helped me. I was a successful high school soccer player, winning a few titles, playing with the NY Red Bulls development team. I played in college. I finished my career and became a personal trainer. I loved helping people achieve their goals, watching their faces light up when they crushed a weight that they have never touched before.
Fast forward to 2018, lifting is literally making me sick. I can’t train the way I want, and if I can’t train myself, then how am I supposed to train other people? But I figured some stuff out, I figured out how to train and make progress without getting sick, without getting hurt, without killing myself in the gym. I started making massive gains, the kind that made my dad proud. The insane part is that I was working less than before and everything was better.
